What furnace cleaning actually involves here

Power goes off at the disconnect first. Gas valve closed. The blower door comes off and the blower assembly slides out on its rails. Each fin of the squirrel cage gets brushed, then vacuumed. Packed dust on those fins acts like added blade pitch, so the fan moves less air than the nameplate says. The cabinet floor is vacuumed out. Burner area and the flame sensor get cleaned separately, by hand.

Filter slots matter more than people expect. In 1950s–70s slab homes the slot is often an open gap in galvanized sheet metal. Ag soil dust and pollen get pulled straight past the filter and settle on the blower wheel. We seal that slot before anything else, or the wheel loads up again.

Wildfire smoke changes the job. Fine particulate lands in the cabinet and on the coil, and recirculates for months afterward. Rodent nesting near a crawlspace return shows up as odor when the burners fire.

Gravity wall and floor furnaces in the oldest cottages have no blower. Cleaning means the floor grille, the firebox and the dust bridging the casing.
